A Windows 10 font navigator is a great alternative to Apple’s robust font management system. With a Windows 10 user, you can navigate the full character map of TrueType fonts installed on your system, and view them in their respective scree, or run through them with the quick navigation bar. There are also neat features like color-coded letters corresponding to different fonts and bitmap representations of your font collection. The utility is made by Microsoft and advised for any Windows 10 user who wants an easy way to manage fonts without going into detail with each individual install. Windows 10 is now available as a trial version or as an upgrade for those who already have the operating system. This font navigator is built into the operating system so there is no need to worry about compatibility. Installation If you’re already in Windows 10, you don’t have to install anything. If you are still on Windows 7 or 8, here are the steps for installation: Step 1: Go to Microsoft’s Windows site and get the preview version of Windows 10. This doesn't cost you anything, but does require an existing license for a previous version of Windows. If you don't have a license key, this free upgrade will allow you to get rid of the nags telling you to buy a copy of Window 10 by July 29th, 2015. Step 2: Once you have the preview, check for an upgrade option. You can do this by going to Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update. Step 3: Once you have a check box next to "Upgrade this computer to Windows 10," a window will appear asking for your key. If you don't have a key, the process is free. Step 4: Now that you've got the preview, go ahead and download it by clicking on the Download button on the bottom right hand corner of that screen. Or else, on any other screen on Microsoft's site accessible from that same Start menu option, click "Get Windows 10" in the bottom right hand corner (for instance here). Step 5: Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions. Font management and navigation features Microsoft’s guide for Windows 10 is easy to read and has a helpful video illustration that illustrates the steps to beginning font management on Windows 10. A lot of information is given in graphics form, but it’s still fairly easy to follow. The guide talks about how to navigate through your library of fonts by creating a bitmap image of them for easy viewing, as well as color coding using the different fonts in your collection. Another useful tool is "Sidebar Icons" which shows you at a glance which fonts are available locally, or have been installed on your system. These icons are helpful when managing many fonts, as you can click on them to open that font in a new window or tab to read more about it. Also, because it’s all done via bitmaps, the fonts don’t load until you actually look at them. Quick access to your fonts is also possible by using the "Show Font Panel" option. This submenu is located in the quick access area of the Start menu, or by clicking on the small icon at the far left of any font folder window. When you right click on any font folder and choose this option, a shortcut menu will come up showing all installed fonts for easy navigation. eccc085e13
